Splash Activities

Last summer the Partnership received £4000 funding from the Ynys Mon Community Safety Partnership (monitored by the Youth Justice System) to organise 5 weeks of activities for 20 young people aged between 11 and 14 from the area. The aim of the scheme is to provide activities for young people over the school holidays in order to divert them away from anti-social behaviour and frustration at having nothing to do. The scheme ran for three weeks in the summer holidays, one week in October half term and one week in February half term 2011. The activities proved highly popular with the young people and included music workshops, outdoor pursuits, first aid courses, personal health workshops, alcohol misuse workshops, swimming and cinema trips and environmental workshops. At the end of the scheme over 118 hours of activities had been provided , requiring a total of 189 volunteer hours, 146 hours of staff time and 1851 hours of young people participating. The scheme was commended by local parent Nia Hughes who told the Partnership that it was great to know that her child was safe and taking part in activities that stopped him getting into trouble in school holidays where he would normally have nothing else to do.

Porthyfelin Learning Survey

The Partnership secured £2000 funding from the Monallau Fund through Menter Mon to employ Katie Jones to conduct a Learning Survey of the ward. The survey was conducted over a ten week period last summer and looked at what forms of training people in the ward had already taken or would like to take in the future. The survey covered 8% of the people living in the ward (185 people in total) and a list of the most popular classes that residents wanted included- local history, music, digital photography and languages. The survey also looked into when residents would prefer to have their classes held in order for it to be made easier for them to attend and whether confidence was an issue that affected them in actually attending the classes that they were interested in. The Partnership will now use the report produced with the results identified to go forward and arrange courses that have been identified whilst taking into account all the barriers that have been described- such as childcare, confidence, times & location. Our first example of this is the IT projects as described below. If you would like a copy of the survey or more information about the report please feel free to contact us.

IT Project

WAG  Anglesey County Council WCVA  ESF

The Partnership has recently worked with Coleg Menai and Ynys Mon County Council’s Lifelong Learning Department to secure over £87,000 funding for an IT project aimed at providing people from the Porthyfelin Ward with free IT training. The project has been funded by the Welsh Assembly Government’s Deprived Area Fund, WCVA Engagement Gateway and Communities First Outcomes Fund and will run until March 2012. Match funding has also come through Coleg Menai and Ynys Mon Council. As a result the Partnership has employed Adrienne Edwards & Natalie Ryder as Project Officers on a Part Time basis. Both officers will be responsible for liaising with training providers such as Coleg Menai to hold courses in the community. All courses will be focused around IT or have elements of IT involved from a range of levels. Keep an eye out for sign up events and recruitment drives that will be organised by Adrienne and Natalie and held in the Community. The project workers will be based at the Town Hall where anyone can call in to discuss courses they may be interested in at any time. Courses can be arranged to suit everyone ranging from very basic/beginners sessions, to more advanced accredited courses.

Job Club

The Job Club has been set up as a branch of the IT project to attract people onto courses and to help identify other areas of learning people may be interested in. The Job Club is also an opportunity to provide support to Job Seekers using IT as a tool. If you or anyone you know needs help looking for jobs online, completing c.v’s or help to fill out application forms the Job club runs from Holyhead Library every Friday between 9.30am and 3.30pm and is free for any job seekers to attend. The Job Club also provides information on what courses are available locally.

Library Sculpture Garden

Phase 1 of the Library Sculpture Garden is now complete. Many of you will have noticed the colourful sculptures placed under the bridge between the Library and Ysgol Y Parc. The sculptures were designed by artist Sean Curly following a number of workshops with Ysgol Y Parc pupils who were asked to give ideas on how they would travel school without having to get out of bed! Plas Cybi Partnership’s environmental team have also worked on the project, as part of the Demonstration Project- helping to take care of the planting and keeping the areas behind the sculptures tidy. Phase 2 of the project will be carried out on the large grassed area adjacent to the Library. Artist Sean Curly has been working with members of the Newry Youth Club and Youth Action Team at the High School on ideas for the designs. The designs are now finished and the pieces are currently being made by Sean. They should start to be put in place by the beginning of this summer. The project has been funded by Ynys Mon County Council’s Lifelong Learning Department, Holyhead Town Council, BTCV, Awards For All Wales, Communities First Trust Fund and Welsh Assembly Government Town Improvement Scheme.

Cymorth Playscheme

Last year we received £2,840 in grant funding from Cymorth. The primary function of the grant was to assist communities in providing free open access play opportunities for children between the ages of 5 and 16 in the area. All Cymorth activities take place during the school holidays and are run by Partnership volunteers. The scheme has proved to be extremely popular and activities provided include sports, dance classes, arts and crafts sessions and trips out. Places were allocated on a first come, first served basis and a total of 53 young people attended the sessions. For the 2011 financial year the Cymorth funding will only be available for the Summer Holidays and so places will fill up quick! If you would like any more information or would like to get to involved please contact the office.

Intergenerational Project

A week of activities took place in the Sea Cadet Unit during February and March 2010 as part of a project designed to encourage more interaction between generations. Activities included art and craft workshops and an interactive story teller, sessions were advertised throughout the ward and parents and grandparents were encouraged to attend. Big thanks are extended to John Hodgkinson who is a resident of the ward for kindly recording the sessions onto DVD. The project was funded by the Children & Young People’s Partnership and was run with the help of partnership volunteers and cost £1,440.

Funding for the above project also financed indoor bowling sessions where the members of the Ynys Mon Bowling Team ran sessions with young people. Members of the Anglesey Bowls Team have been approached on many occasions by young people asking to ‘have a go’. We decided to run six sessions of indoor bowls for all ages to see if this would be something that young people in the area would be interested in. From the funding received we purchased small bowls and refreshments. The sessions turned out to be very popular with over 45 children taking part overall as well as 12 adults. On one evening in particular 30 young people attended.

Bridging The Gap – Community Cohesion Project

The Partnership submitted a joint bid with MORLO Communities First to the Anglesey County Council’s Crime and Community Safety Partnership Community Cohesion Fund. We were successful in receiving the funding to run a diversity project in Ysgol Y Parc and Ysgol Llanfawr. The project took place in the last week of March 2010. The aim of the project was to promote diversity and create a better understanding of other cultures & countries and to increase community cohesion with stronger links between the Community First Partnerships and local schools. Both schools took part in a number of multi-cultural activities such as Indian dancing, Korean writing, Hip-Hop dance workshops, International stories and visits to local Indian restaurants to do food tasting sessions. Both schools expressed their sincere thanks and have said the project was a huge success and an excellent opportunity for the pupils.

Youth Club

After the success of the Indoor bowling sessions, staff members and volunteers realised there was a huge lack of provision for children between the ages of 5-11 in the area. It was agreed that the children would benefit greatly from a Youth Club so two of our volunteers who are trained Youth Workers were inspired to set one up. The idea was put forward to the Newry Community Centre Committee who was very supportive and offered a donation to get the club up and running along with use of the hall rent free. The Youth Club was an instant hit with parents and children alike with 17 members in the first week. This has now risen to 125 in less than a year with an average of 65 children attending each week. Activities in the Youth Club include games, sports, arts & crafts, puppet shows, and outdoor activities on Parc School field when the weather is nice! The Club has also held Halloween and Christmas Discos. The Youth Club is run by volunteers every Wednesday evening from 5.30-7pm and is free to attend once an annual membership fee of £1 has been paid. So far the Club has been lucky and has received lots of equipment which has been kindly donated by residents and parents of the ward. We are always on the look out for more equipment such as board games, pool cues etc in order to keep the activities fun. If you have anything that you could donate to the club please contact us. The Youth Club is open to all children of Primary school age and new members are always welcome. If you would like to join or would like more information please contact Porthyfelin Partnership’s office on 01407 764222

Taking Control - Adult Learners Week

The Partnership secured £900 from the Anglesey Community Education Group to organise some taster sessions for Adult Learners Week. 25 learners took part in the two events. Taster sessions included: salsa, keep fit, nail technology, music, C.A.B advice & budgeting. All of the taster sessions were in local venues such as the Newry Community Centre and many of the people who participated in the week have requested more courses. Over 2000 leaflets and posters were distributed prior to the event and 17 local residents attended the events.

Sea Cadets Renovation

Sea Cadets  Cheque

Since working with the Holyhead Sea Cadets on a project to renovate the Unit on Newry Beach, the Partnership has helped to secure funding from the Big Lottery, Children In Need, Community Facilities & Activities Programme, the Garfield Weston Foundation and Bernard Sunley Charitable Trust totalling almost £575,000 for a three year project that will help to dramatically improve the services offered to young people locally whilst also creating a modern facility that can be used by the whole community and overnight accommodation facilities for visiting cadet units and outdoor pursuits groups. This is a huge project for the area and will result in one full-time employment position initially. It is hoped that the project will help the cadets expand their services to offer more activities for young people in the area and to produce enough money to but new, modern equipment that will attract more members to the organisation.

‘It’s taken us five years to get tot his point, from when the young people first told us that they wanted better facilities to enjoy their activities. The money will allow us to create a modern, warm and welcoming centre for youth activities in the area in all weather conditions and throughout the year. While our main responsibilities are for the wellbeing of the Sea Cadets activities in the area, the refurbishing of the building on Newry Beach will allow us to extend a welcome to the local community to make use of the building and the site’.

Secretary of the Holyhead Sea Cadets Gerwyn Jones.

The building will receive a total renovation and will have a new kitchen, shower and toilet facilities and disabled access as part of the project. The scheme is just short of the total amount of funding needed for the project and has applications in for the shortfall, it is hoped that the building works will begin in June this year. For more information on the project please contact the partnership office on 01407 764222.

Kiddyland CIC

Kiddyland Community Interest Company- Business as Usual!!

Kiddyland CIC small

The project came about when concerned parents initially approached the Porthyfelin Communities First Partnership, MORLO Communities First Partnership, local CVS (Medrwn Mon) and Wales Co-op to ask for suggestions and ways forward as they were keen to save the Nursery when the current owner had expressed an interest in closing the business. All parties gave advice and following this a committee was formed by parents whose children attended the nursery and other specialist advisors. Morawelon and London Road Communities First Partnership and Porthyfelin Communities First Partnerships approached the Welsh Assembly to ask if they could fund a business plan for the group as they were concerned about the time limit with the business being up for sale and the possibility of the business being closed down. Approval was given and Empower was commissioned to undertake a feasibility study/business plan for the group. Once it was established through the business plan/feasibility study that the scheme was viable the group then decided with the help of Wales Co-operative to establish a Community Interest Company as this was the best model that suited their plans and future objectives. The Porthyfelin Partnership has led the funding application process for the group over the past few years and applied to various funders during this time. In February 2011 the group finally had the news that they had longed for and all of the funding for the purchase of the Nursery had been secured by the Porthyfelin Partnership through the Welsh Assembly Governments Communities Facilities and Activities Programme. This funding amounted to £214,950. The committee have held fundraising activities throughout the past few years and have been able to pay for a surveyors report out of their own funds. The purchase process is underway and things are running smoothly therefore the Nursery will continue to run as normal until the purchase is complete with no disruption. The Porthyfelin Partnership is now looking to secure a small amount of revenue for the group to boost the first year funds.

"The directors of Kiddyland Nursery Community Interest Company (CIC) would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff of Porthyfelin Partnership for their long and unwavering support over the past couple of years. In particular the work that they put into the brining together of the application for the Welsh Assembly Grant awarded to the CIC in February this year. Thanks to the Porthyfelin Partnership, the CIC have put in an offer for Kiddyland and are following the legal path required to purchase. This however is not the end as there is still a lot to do. The CIC will continue to fundraise and would also like to thank everyone else (parents, staff, other organisations as well as the general public) for their support".

Ruth Owen- Secretary, Kiddyland Community Interest Company.

Cheesy feet & Toe Jams!!........

The Partnership received £1202 funding from Anglesey County Council’s Anglesey Wellbeing Grant 2010-11 to hold two eductional playsin the High School and Ysgol Y Parc. ‘Cheesy Feet and Toe Jam’ was performed to year 6 pupils in Ysgol Y Parc. It was a forty minute musical play with a comical view, covering issues of healthy eating, exercise, alcohol & drugs misuse, why getting enough sleep is important, positive relationships with friends and family, puberty, sexual health, the repercussions of smoking and personal hygiene. The other play, ‘Just have One’ was performed in Holyhead High School. It was a fifty minute, thought provoking character driven play all about drugs and alcohol and the effects that many people face. The play covered the following issues; peer pressure, substance misuse, exploration of the statistics surrounding the number of people raped and sexually attacked whilst under the influence of alcohol and drugs, recreational drug use, the long and short term effects drugs have on the user, the wider effect drugs have on the user and dealers family and the community as a whole, how quickly & easily recreational drug use can turn to serious drug addiction, and finally the unglamorous life of a drug dealer. After both performances question and answer sessions were held enabling the pupils/young people to ask the different characters questions about their motives, Both schools stated that the plays were a very effective way of getting a very important message through to young people.

Moving on Up!

We have been working closely with Holyhead High School’s Community Link Co-ordinator Debbie Parry and Ysgol Yr Parc to make the transition from year 6 primary school to year 7 secondary school smoother for the young people. The project involves 11 year 6 pupils from Ysgol Y Parc visiting Ysgol Uwchradd Caergybi on a weekly basis for 5 weeks to take part in the various after school activities the High School has to offer. Activities included : design technology, P.E, art and cooking. The pupils are picked up from Ysgol Y Parc at 3.30pm each Thursday and dropped back off at Ysgol Y Parc at 4.35pm. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed themselves. This was a pilot project that is set to run in all of the primary schools in Holyhead.

Projects in the pipeline

Maes Y Dref- the Partnership has been working with residents of Maes Y Dref and St Seiriol’s close with a view to developing a disused area of land in street. The large patch of land backs on to St Seiriols Graveyard and there is no access to it other than on foot. At present the area is being used as a walkthrough from the graveyard into St Seiriols and has been used as an area for people congregating to drink. At the end of 2009 Partnership staff and members of the Newry Activities Group consulted with residents about possible uses for the land and residents decided that a small communal garden or allotment would be the best idea. The Partnership has been in contact with the county council about creating a possible lease over the land and talks are still ongoing. For more information on the project please call the office on 01407 764222.

St Seiriols Close- Warden’s Building. The Partnership has been working with the County Council’s Housing and Social services departments to try and re-open the communal lounge in the Warden’s Building in St Seiriols Close. The building has been empty for some time and members of the community have expressed the need for the lounge to be re-opened for the elderly residents living in the vicinity. The Partnership understands that the building has recently been refurbished and is in ongoing discussions with the County Council to try and arrange that the room be opened in the near future.
